"Our third stay at the Oval and our fifth of visiting and staying in Dunster. Lucy, every stay is perfect. We come here and everything we need for a relaxing stay is provided – the only thing I need is more time! This visit I brought my mum to celebrate her 75th birthday, her first stay here. Dunster has enhanced her, as it has us. Alfie, our black Labrador has had a blast, one sad puppy dog and mummy on leaving. Looking forward to being back here at the end of December for Dunster by candlelight." May 2015

Comments from our Guest Book

This is our fourth stay in Dunster but our first at The Oval. It is a beautiful character cottage with everything needed for a more than comfortable stay. Thank you Lucy and Paul, we have thoroughly enjoyed staying here and it was nice to meet you both. I love this place. Many thanks.
Zoe, Jon, Pat, Bob and Sam the Collie, September 2017

The cottage was beautiful. Every room so clean and pretty. We had a wonderful holiday around Dunster and it was such a great place to stay. The welcome cake was scrummy and such a lovely thought. Thank you so much.
Clare, David, Star and Sheila, August 2017

After many years of visiting Dunster I think that we have finally found the one. Everything was perfect from start to finish. See you again soon.
Nathan, Tanya, Jazmin, Ruby and Kassie the dog, August 2017

As soon as we walked in we said wow, as walking through the door was like coming home! The cottage has a lovely warm feel to it. We loved our week’s stay, visiting many beautiful places. Along the coast to Ilfracombe, Lynton and Lynmouth, Blue Anchor beach, Dunster Castle and spending a fortune in 2p’s on the machines in Minehead! The cottage had everything we could have asked for, thank you for the tea and cake on arrival. Bella our dog says thanks for the biscuits – she settled in straight away. We will recommend The Oval to everyone, and hopefully will come back again soon.
The Crosby family, July 2017

Dunster. How do you describe it? A bit off yesteryear locked in a time warp - you have guessed it - we love it "we'll be back"!! Don't tell anyone about al fresco eating in the secret garden of the Luttrell Arms... pleasant place to unwind, eat and drink. So, once again thank you Lucy for another memorable stay the best of luck with Pilgrim Corner and The Old Sweet Shop in Minehead - two more beautiful cottages to check out.
The Webbs June 2017

We arrived in glorious sunshine and blue skies to find this beautiful cottage which just seemed to open up room after room of pure charm and delight. We enjoyed St George’s Day parade on 23rd, through Dunster from the Castle to St George’s Church and finished with Morris dancing. We had a packed week which has come to an end all too quickly. How we wished we could stay for another week, but then there’s always next time. Thank you for a fantastic week, we are relaxed and revitalised ready for our busy schedule.
Helpful Holidays guests, April 2017

We will definitely be back! Can’t believe how quick the week has gone. This is a wonderful property. Favourite things to do – walk down North Hill in Minehead to Selworthy for a slice of cake, and Porlock Weir – very relaxed.
Helpful Holidays guests April 2017

Another amazing stay here at The Oval. I really can’t rate this cottage highly enough, we all feel like it is our second home now. This is our fourth stay at The Oval, but it is our eighth visit to Dunster. We do the same things every year and we never get bored: Horner Water – the best cream tea and lovely walks, Porlock Weir – hours spent throwing stones into the sea then a drink at The Ship, Dunster Beach – sandcastles and paddling, the Foresters Arms – the friendliest pub ever! We’ll never stop returning to Dunster each year, nor will we stay anywhere else, thank you to all involved.
Team Foster, April 2017

It has been five years since we lasted visited The Oval, and once again it was perfect. The Oval is by far the best cottage we’ve stayed in. Everybody is so nice in Dunster, and it is a lovely village. I’m sure we’ll be back soon.
Joe, Ellen, Lilly and Bill, who travel from Belgium, April 2017

Our second stay at The Oval and every bit as good as the first. We love the cottage and the village and have had a lovely time. We hope to be back another day :-)
Karen, Robbie, Jimmy, Rose & Lily the dog, February 2017

You have great taste! We have had a wonderful stay in this beautiful house. It has everything you could possibly need, it’s so comfortable and cosy. We loved all the furnishings, curtains etc., and all the nice touches. This is our fourth visit to Dunster and this house was the best by far. We enjoyed the cake and tea tray on arrival! We hope to come back and to try Pilgrim Corner too.
The Keefe family, February 2017

A great New Year break. The Oval fulfilled all expectations. Attention to detail was spot-on. Having stayed in many holiday cottages, it’s extremely important to get the details and little touches right – and The Oval succeeds. Very comfy, very atmospheric and with all modern conveniences. The beds were really comfortable, and the kitchen very well-equipped. We all loved Dunster and will definitely return. Thank you.
Vicky, Alan, Rob and Vicky, January 2017

Our first visit to The Oval but certainly not the last. This has been the best cottage we have stayed in over the years, very homely and the quality of fittings is superb. The four-poster bed was a treat, it was so comfortable, we didn’t want to get up. The doggies enjoyed their walks in the woods and we enjoyed the rounds of tea rooms and pubs! Can’t wait to plan our next trip.
Judith and Tony Hall, Tom & Rusty the dogs, December 2016

Although we’ve been to Dunster many, many times, this is our first visit during winter and during Dunster by Candlelight. We’ve had a great time and it’s been nice to see Dunster in another season. Everyone has been as friendly as ever, and the cottage has been as cosy as always…not sure whether I like it best in spring or winter! Thank you for the opportunity to stay in this wonderful cottage again. Can’t wait to return in April 2017.
The Fosters, December 2016

Our second visit to The Oval, a wonderful cottage and ‘home from home’. Thanks again.
Louise, Paul, Maria and the dogs, October 2016

Thank you Lucy for another pleasant stay at The Oval. It has everything we needed even down to dishwasher tablets, it is those little extras that make a difference. This time around our children took advantage of the toys, books and jigsaws. Dad completed one of the jigsaws in six days! A big thank you for our welcome gifts and lovely note, this was much appreciated. We love the local pub ‘The Foresters Arms’ it’s less formal dining experience is so great for us with young children. The kids love his magic tricks. Again, we adore Dunster, it is one of our favourite holiday destinations.
Mandy, Jez, Ruby and Harry Plead, October 2016

Lovely old world cottage, everything catered for and enjoyed by us all. We also enjoyed the Forester’s Arms pub grub, the warm welcome and the parrot! A good time had by all – thank you!
Andrew, Sheila, Lauren, Dean, Brendan, Terry and Bella Boo, October 2016

Very pleasant, well equipped cottage. Well situated for interesting trips out without having to use a car at all! Many thanks for the arrival goodies – very kind. I really wonderful holiday

Thank you for a lovely welcome. Loved our stay here, comfortable home. Everything you need. The walks are wonderful and the countryside and coastline is beautiful. The garden is bountiful and pleasant. This cottage exceeded our expectations.

Having read all the comments in the visitors book I am at a loss as to what to say. All I can say is that all the previous guests have covered all the kind and heart felt comments about this lovely cottage, which is a credit to you Lucy. My wife and I can only endorse what has been said about The Oval and Dunster. It has been a joy and pleasure to have stayed here and I certainly will not rule out a return visit. Ps, Kola said thank you for the doggy treats!
Brian, Hazel and our dog Kola, September 2016

It was great to stay in Dunster again after a 15-year break! The Oval is clean, comfortable and well-equipped - the beds especially are comfortable. We loved all the quirks and character, the history of the cottage is very intriguing. The decked area in the garden is a peaceful place to sit on a sunny afternoon. There are plenty of places to visit near Dunster, and we could spend hours in the village itself with the castle and all the local walks. Plenty of good places to eat and drink. Thank you for the welcome cake and tray – much appreciated after our journey!
August 2016

Historically intriguing house – very well equipped and comfortable. A three generation holiday. Your utility room served as a shop, ice cream parlour and jail for two imagination granddaughters! Dunster is a great place to stay as everything is within walking distance, all in a delightful landscape.
Team Carter, August 2016

A fab cottage with everything we could possibly need, even with four adults, two children and a baby! Would recommend Dunster beach, Dunster Castle, Watermouth Castle and Devon Railway Centre for the kids. The park nearby at Gallox Bridge is also great!! Fish and chips at the Driftwood Café in Blue Anchor are an absolute must. Thank you for a great holiday.
August 2016

We are a family of three generations and we all agree that this is the best cottage we have ever stayed in. It’s our home from home! We enjoyed: The Castle, Minehead beach, fish and chips at the Driftwood Café, all the coffee shops in Dunster, the friendliness of all the locals and exploring the many walks. We will return.
August 2016

A very well-equipped cottage with very comfortable beds. We enjoyed the coastal walk from Minehead to Dunster and then back on the steam train. The Welcome Tray was appreciated as was the reserved National Trust car parking ticket. Thank you.
Betty, Tom, Mary, Clare, Tom and Oliver, July 2016

Wonderful cottage full of charm and character. It’s really well equipped with a good welcome pack – thanks for the cake! For fit people we recommend a walk up Grabbist Hill, and we really enjoyed our meal at The Stag’s Head Inn opposite at reasonable prices. Thank you Lucy.
July 2016

A lovely quirky house, equipped with everything we could need and more. Thank you for adding all those little touches that make staying here even more of a pleasure. Fantastic location - and weather to match! Good food everywhere in Dunster, great cider and ale and friendly people. Enjoyed walks and unspoiled beaches nearby. Look forward to returning sometime soon.
June 2016

We have had an absolutely fantastic time! The house itself is absolutely amazing and is in such a fantastic location. It has been great weather and we have enjoyed sitting at the top of the garden with a pot of tea on many occasions. Many thanks for the ‘welcome back’ basket, it was lovely. Highlights of the holiday were the castle and the railway – we would recommend them again and again. Thank you for a lovely stay!
Simon and Chelsea, May 2016

Another lovely stay in a great house in a beautiful place. Thoroughly enjoyed walks, food and drink, scenery and the weather (two weeks of sun while it snowed back home!). We will return, thank you for the basket of goodies and dog treats – delicious.
Helen, Nigel and Connie the dog, April 2016

We've all had another lovely week here in Dunster made even better by having this wonderful cottage to stay in. The "welcome back" hamper was a lovely touch - thank you! We didn't do anything different this year to all the other years we've been holidaying in Dunster - cream teas, cider drinking etc. But it's been great as always. The kids loved Dunster beach and the park round the corner‎ and the adults always enjoy the local cider at the Foresters Arms. Horner Water Tea Rooms is always a favourite with us is as is a trip to Porlock Weir. Once again we'll be sorry to say goodbye to Dunster and The Oval but we'll be in touch with Lucy to book for Easter next year!
The Fosters with Parker the dog, April 2016

Our third stay at The Oval – we love this place. Still thoroughly recommend The Stag and The Luttrell Arms for food. Our favourite walk is to Dunkery Beacon and our new ‘find’ this year was the walk to the tallest tree in Britain. Great cafes at Simonsbath, Withypool, and Blue Anchor. Thank you again for letting us stay in this historic building.
Helpful Holidays guests, March 2016

Excellent holiday in a lovely cottage. Dunster is a great location for walking, sightseeing and visiting pubs. We particularly enjoyed the Deer Circuit, The Luttrell Arms, and the trip on the stream train. The castle and grounds are beautiful. Thanks for the Easter eggs and the doggie treats. We'd love to return.
Helpful Holidays guests, March 2016

The Oval is always a special and magical place and we hope to come back as soon as possible.
Helpful Holidays guests, January 2016

This was our second visit to The Oval - a fantastic cottage for Christmas! We had an amazing time, the cottage is well equipped with a great selection of games, books and DVD's. We spent the week in a perfect Christmas bubble. Highly recommend a visit to the Stags Head for Food - very friendly and welcoming and almost opposite the cottage."
Helpful Holidays guests, New Year 2015

A lovely cottage, thank you!
Helpful Holidays guests, Christmas 2015

Thank you so much for letting us stay in your wonderful cottage. I have been once before and will certainly be back again! My boyfriend loved his birthday surprise (this holiday) and even the weather was kind to us. There are some lovely walks. We really recommend the Bats Castle circuit – we saw a herd of beautiful wild deer and a group of Exmoor ponies.
Ariana and Tom, November 2015

What can we say but what an absolutely fabulous place The Oval is!! Well appointed, very comfortable and peaceful. We all enjoyed exploring Dunster, loved the castle and the West Somerset steam train adventure. Thank you for the Welcome Pack, and the whole week in the cottage - we will definitely love to come again.

Thank you for the welcoming tea tray – a delightful touch in such a welcoming and well-appointed house. Exceptional fabrics and textures, and everything tasteful and pleasing – we really have enjoyed staying in this house. The upper terrace is sunny and peaceful – many a cuppa and glass shared there! A really nice feature as outdoor space is so important. Good central location, and plenty to do in Dunster. A very successful holiday.
Helpful Holidays guests, September 2015

I am here with one of my sisters to revisit all the places that we remember from staying in Old Cleeve for our holidays when younger. It has been a nostalgic week. Dunster is such an excellent base and we the house is comfortable with just about everything one is likely to need. The views on Conygar Tower are very good. Porlock Weir is full of charm.
The Elliots, September 2015

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, don’t want to leave! Thank you for making the cottage so welcoming – it’s the first time anybody has left treats for our dog. The village is stunning and we recommend Lynton, Lynmouth, Watchet and the steam train from Minehead for a visit. The market at Watchet held on a Wednesday is lovely, and definitely pay a visit to the chip shop! We will definitely be back. Loved it.
Helen, Nigel and Carrie, September 2015

We are back again to Dunster and The Oval. A fantastic cottage as usual with everything thought out. Thank you for the lovely gifts. Food at Stag’s Head always very good, including the staff. We will be back and we hope to also try Pilgrim Corner in the future. Thank you for sharing your lovely home.
Sue, Bob, Penny and Gary, September 2015

Thank you for letting us stay in your beautiful cottage. We had everything we needed. Dunster is a lovely village and we really enjoyed our visit to the castle. All the beds were lovely and I enjoyed the comfort of a good night’s sleep. A lovely cottage where families can spend quality time.
Sharran, Tony, Kara, August 2015

A most interesting house with lots of history and at the same time very comfortable. We know the area well, but have not stayed at the Oval before. It is lovely and very well equipped. We have been too involved with the area – walking and sightseeing – to watch television. Dunster has so much to offer - we could not do it all in a week.
Helpful Holidays Guests, August 2015

Yet again, a beautiful holiday in a beautiful cottage. It is very much a home from home. We’re very sad to go as a week is not long enough, hopefully we will be back again next year.
Owens family, August 2015

A wonderful holiday in a lovely home. Never knew Dunster had so much to offer with great walks and historic castles etc. to visit and very convenient transport from the main road to travel into Minehead. We didn’t have time to travel to all the other places as we were too busy enjoying this cottage and village. It took a move to Berkshire to bring me back again to Somerset, and the lovely Oval, a wonderful holiday and beautiful cottage. We have really enjoyed our time here and very much enjoyed showing our two boys where I grew up. We should definitely be booking again for a fortnight next time as a week is nowhere near long enough.
Redman and Hill family, August 2015

We enjoyed our stay in an old house with a special atmosphere. We have had several good walks along the woodland, the heather and the beach.
The Hood family, July 2015

Thanks again for our third visit to your very conveniently placed cottage for the archery week.
Alan and Hillary Clark, July 2015

Thanks for providing all we needed for a pleasant holiday in a beautiful cottage and in a lovely, interesting village. The dogs have enjoyed the walks enormously. They especially enjoyed the walks from Tarr Steps and Doone Valley. I liked the Bakelite Museum very much, but it might not suit someone who preferred order over nostalgia. Cleeve Abbey was worth a visit too. In Dunster, so was The Stag’s Head and the Luttrell Arms, which provided good food and a pleasing atmosphere.
Brian, Sue, Alex, Nick and Monty, July 2015

First visit to The Oval since the late 1970’s when the house was owned by my wife’s cousin. Times have changed since then with children and grandchildren, some of whom were included on this trip. The house is still very familiar, even after 35 years. Bottom line, an excellent holiday.
Andy, Chris, Val and Dave, June 2015

Perfect match of old world charm with modern convenience at The Oval, in a lovely area of the country. Well-equipped cottage with extras for kids and dogs. We hope to return.
Tate, John, Daisy, Matilda and Margot, July 2015

Our third stay at the Oval and our fifth of visiting and staying in Dunster. Looking forward to being back here at the end of December for Dunster by candlelight.
The Deeming family, May 2015

Many thanks for the warm welcome - lovely cake! We have really enjoyed staying here, in spite of a few bruised heads! A beautiful historic house. We came here for a walking holiday and found wonderful countryside, views, villages and bridges.
Kate, Pauline and Sue, May 2015

A very comfortable and well-equipped cottage. Very warm and cosy. Had a great week with wonderful walks. This is our second visit to Dunster, and we look forward to returning to this unspoilt part of the country.
The Conway family, May 2015

Lovely week exploring the area – the cottage was wonderful. Don’t want to leave – never felt so relaxed. Lovely welcome with tea tray all laid up. Beautiful village – hope to return again one day.
Sandra, Jon, Buffy and Milly, April 2015

We discovered Dunster years ago and have been coming back each year because we love it, however this is the first time we’ve stayed at The Oval. And what a find, it’s the best cottage we’ve stayed in. Everything is beautifully presented and the attention to detail is second to none. Thank you to all involved. The kids loved playing with the toys, the adults loved the fact the kitchen was good for entertaining, and we all spent many hours enjoying the cosy living room. Even Parker (our dog) was catered for. We are heading back home today to set a date for next year and will be in touch to book very soon as we can’t wait to return.
Foster & Reid family, April 2015

Thank you for a wonderful stay at The Oval. We loved all the historic nooks and crannies - so much history. We loved reading about the cottage. We have stayed in many holiday cottages over the years, some have been quite historical in age but this has to be the best by far. Thank you for the little added touches – cake, coffee, tea and milk, the bathroom accessories and the dogs would like to say thank you and wag tails for the dog treats and dog equipment you provided. We found everyone in Dunster so friendly: The Stag was very popular and the beer went down well with my husband and Teddy, our dog,was made most welcome. Although we were here only a week, it was not long enough and now we are nearly ready to make our journey home. Many thanks again for all supplied, including the wood for our first fire. We hope to visit again sometime.
Helpful Holidays guests March 2015

Another smashing week at The Oval, thank you for everything.
Brenda and Andy, March 2015

The Oval was a very welcoming host and truly looked after us for a fabulous week. More of a home-from-home really. Thank you for making the house so well-equipped and cosy, we are really sad to leave and return home to reality. The castle grounds and gardens are magical, well worth at least one visit. The Luttrell Arms was a great lunch and a cosy spot for a drink. We would love to return, and our toddler boy appreciated the toys.
Helpful Holidays guests, Christmas 2014

This was our fourth time at The Oval (second for Christmas) – a truly lovely place to stay. Thank you for the welcome pack, Tessa the dog enjoyed her treats. Places to eat include the Luttrell Arms, the Royal Oak at Luxborough and The Ship Aground in Minehead. Dunster church is a must, as are all the lovely walks around Dunster and, of course, the walk from Dunster Beach to Blue Anchor with a coffee (and cake) at The Drifters Café. Needless to say we will be back.
Gill and Max, Christmas 2014

A truly wonderful stay at The Oval – a super cottage and comfortably furnished. This is really well-supplied and comfortable cottage, and is a great place to stay. Thank you for the lovely cake and tea, and the treats for the dogs.
Helpful Holidays guests, November 2014

A fab time was had by us all. Thank you for all the little touches. We look forward to seeing you again.
Helpful Holidays guests, November 2014

Thank you for The Oval. I have just celebrated my 50th birthday here – a wonderful surprise present from my wonderful husband. This is my second stay here in The Oval, this house is so full of old world charm and is so cosy and welcoming. Thank you for sharing this wonderful home - as soon as I get home I shall book up for next year! Very, very sad to leave The Oval and Dunster as both have stolen my heart.
Helpful Holidays guests, October 2014

We have spent a wonderful week in this enchanting old house, it was very welcoming and cosy in the evenings. Dunster is a great base for exploring the countryside, forests, beaches etc. We are departing having recharged our batteries feeling happy and relaxed. Many, many thanks for sharing this lovely house.
Helpful Holidays guests, September 2014

We have spent a wonderful family week in your lovely old house, it truly is a home-from-home. Dunster is a charming village and there are so many beautiful areas not far away. We loved the house, it is very comfortable and well-equipped.
Helpful Holidays guests, August 2014

This is a wonderful house in a truly magical area of England. One of the highlights has been sitting on the decked area looking out over the moors and listening to the church bells. Thank you so much.
Helpful Holidays guests, August 2014

We have stayed at many holiday cottages in and around Somerset and Devon but this lovely house really does outshine anything we have stayed in before! This house has everything we could have possibly needed to make our stay so special in such a comfortable home-from-home. The master bedroom was a lovely surprise- stunning four poster bed which was extremely comfortable and gave the most peaceful nights’ sleep . We can honestly say there is nothing we would change about The Oval, the owner clearly loves this house and all the little touches do make it a wonderful place to stay! We will definitely be recommending it to our friends and cannot wait to return! Thank you for a very relaxing and comfortable week in your lovely home
Private booking, July 2014

We have very much enjoyed our stay at The Oval. The cottage is ideal for a family, spacious and with everything you need. The garden is lovely with great views from the top terrace – great for a glass of wine in the evening. Lastly thank you for the welcome pack it was just what we needed after a long journey.
Helpful Holidays guests, July 2014

The Oval. I thought it was just a cricket ground, but it’s more than that, it’s a lovely place to stay and everything has been thought of. There is so much going on in and around the village and the locals are very friendly. This is one of our top holiday destinations – the dogs love it too. Thank you for the welcome pack, it went down a treat.
Helpful Holidays guests, July 2014

Dear Lucy, our second visit to this characterful cottage and hopefully not our last. We love all your little touches which show the consideration you have for your guests. Thank you for ‘lending’ us your lovely property which is a real home from home.
Helpful Holidays guests, June 2014

What can I say that hasn't been entered before? Not a lot! This is a wonderful house in a wonderful area – Somerset will no longer be just the county we pass through on the way to Devon and Cornwall. The house has very little which is 'level', not a lot that is 'upright', and nothing 'square' - just as it should be!
Helpful Holidays guests, June 2014

Been to the West Country several times, visited Dunster lots of time, but first time to stay. Very lovely cottage, especially warm and inviting with extra touches. Many thanks for sharing it with us.
Helpful Holidays guests, May 2014

Lovely cottage and a wonderful holiday. You have thought of everything. Second time in Dunster and first at The Oval – we will be back!
Helpful Holidays guests, May 2014

We loved our stay at The Oval and will even miss bowing our heads to go through doorways. We had a terrific weather week which was unexpected. Many of the surrounding villages are quaint but none as good a place to stay as Dunster.
Helpful Holidays guests, May 2014

We have stayed in many cottages throughout the South and West of England but this is definitely the loveliest to date. Love the age of the building, and the way it has been furnished. The surrounding areas are beautiful with pleasant walks.
Helpful Holidays guests, May 2014

Third time at The Oval, the cottage is beautiful, like the surrounding area. We will definitely come again and again as everybody just loves it.
Helpful Holidays guests, April 2014

A lovely stay at The Oval – our second time and just as lovely. We love the house as it is so comfortable. Dunster is great. So many amazing walks, our favourites are Dunkery Beacon and Selworthy.
Helpful Holidays guests, April 2014

We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Oval. We have booked many times through Helpful Holidays and we think that this is the best place we've stayed. The house is absolutely gorgeous. The history of the place and the village of Dunster are amazing. The small touches (cake, tea, treats for our dog) set the place above others we've stayed in. Thanks very much for those very welcoming things. We've very much enjoyed the area. We are keen walkers so have enjoyed Exmoor, walks around Porlock and various others. Will definitely recommend The Oval to others and hope to be back someday.
Helpful Holidays guests, February 2014

I have worked in the travel industry for many years, signing up five star hotels and airport destinations...so I am extremely fussy. As a family we travel a lot, staying in cottages, five star hotels and game lodges...but we have never stayed in such a lovely property. The layout, decoration, cleanliness and the attention to detail are superb, as is the wonderful homely feel when you close the front door from the outside world. We've cooked, played games around the table, watched DVDs and generally stayed in more than we had planned. We can but thank you! We've loved our stay and hope we can return later this year. It is the most well-equipped cottage – I will be talking to Helpful Holidays.
Helpful Holidays guests, January 2014

We have had a wonderful holiday in your amazing cottage. This is the second time we've stayed, it was brilliant first time and equally brilliant second time. New Year was great, church bells ringing and fireworks in the village, don't want to rave on too much or everyone will want to stay and we won't be able to book again! The cottage is warm, cosy and like being in a cocoon from the world. Thank you for sharing your lovely home, we feel relaxed, rested and will certainly be back.
Helpful Holidays guests, January 2014

Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful place with us – The Oval has given us the most magical Christmas ever! It is the cosiest holiday home we've ever stayed in. The weather hasn't been kind to us but staying in, cosying up by the fire and visiting the local pubs has more than made up for the rain. We've loved our stay and are very sad to be going – we'll certainly be back before long!
Helpful Holidays guests, December 2013

This is the ideal place for Dunster by Candlelight. There are so many walks to do without getting into a car.
Helpful Holidays guests, December 2013

I just wanted to say what a fantastic time we had in your fabulous cottage. The cottage was really cosy, well equipped and great for our dog Angel. We will certainly be back so thanks for making our stay special.
Helpful Holidays guests, November 2013

Really lovely cottage, very warm and cosy. We enjoyed the four poster bed! Had some nice trips out visiting places we last saw over 65 years ago when I was 10. It is a lovely time of year to visit, all the beech and larch trees going a golden colour...especially impressed by the beach huts on Dunster beach, a real surprise and quite stunning. All-in-all a great week.
Helpful Holidays guests, November 2013

Really beautiful cottage, with welcoming tea and cakes (plus treats for the dogs!) It is lovely and warm. Dunster is lovely, and we would love to return one year for Dunster by Candlelight – when we do we shall definitely stay here at The Oval. Thank you for ensuring our stay was perfect.
Helpful Holidays guests, October 2013

Had a great week, lovely walks, sunshine and showers. We ate twice at The Stag – the food was lovely and the staff were friendly and welcoming. Also visited Reeves with gorgeous food and very nice people, and the Luttrell Arms which is also very friendly. It is a brilliant cottage - everything fab. Housekeeping excellent – all the facilities we could have wished for!
Returning guests Liz, Mark and Bailey (the chocolate lab who loves the house!), September 2013

The Oval is a beautiful property in a beautiful village and we have really enjoyed our stay here. We went to Arlington Hall, also walked on the coast path from Minehead to Porlock, and walked some of the Coleridge Way, as well as a trip to Dorset to find fossils on Charnmouth Beach. Many thanks for making us welcome.

The Oval is in a great location, within 5 minutes stroll of the village and castle of Dunster; we found that the road was more than adequately wide enough to cope with our large 4x4. The cottage itself is spacious, well equipped and comfortable, with more than adequate facilities and the bonus of plenty of toys and games to keep the children occupied during the evening. We found the best place for a drink to be the Luttrell Arms and Dunster village shop covers the basic; however both Tesco and Morrisons at Minehead are only a 5 minute drive away for provisions. For those with children, a top tip is to wait until after 2pm for entry to Butlins (if they want to go to the indoor water park, which is a good wet weather option), as it is quiet and also half price - we found 2 to 3 hours is more than enough! We can also recommend the award-winning fish and chip shop on Bampton Street in Minehead. If it's a sunny day then the 50 minute drive to Woolacombe is well worth it for the beach but you MUST leave early to avoid the traffic. Porlock, Lynton, Lynmouth and Bossington are all within a few minutes' drive and worth a look. If you want to go either cycling or horse riding (local hire facilities in or near Minehead) then book well in advance, we were left disappointed through leaving it to the last minute to book. Overall we can't fault The Oval for value-for-money, comfort and space, and the location and proximity to so many places of interest is a great selling point.
TripAdvisor review, August 2013

This was our second visit to this property and we will definitely be returning next year! Fantastic property – a real home from home!
Helpful Holidays guests, June 2013

This cottage was beautiful and in a great location enabling us to enjoy Dunster with our family, young and old, by foot. Both cottage and village steeped in history.
Helpful Holidays guests, June 2013

The property was fantastic – could not ask for better!
Helpful Holidays guests, June 2013

The cottage was a real treat. The facilities were excellent, as was the presentation. Clearly a lot of thought and effort has gone into providing the guests with everything they could possibly need. Would definitely go back!
Helpful Holidays guests, May 2013

A really beautiful house, one of the best we have stayed in.
Helpful Holidays guests, May 2013

This is a spacious and well equipped house with many lovely walks right from the front door. We enjoyed lunch on the upper terrace in the spring sunshine, refreshments at the Luttrell Arms and a relaxing stay in a warm and comfortable house.
Helpful Holidays guests, April 2013

The Oval is a stunningly beautiful property with beautiful period features yet with all modern facilities and every bit of equipment you could wish for, this by far the best family holiday we have had to date. Dunster is a magical location with its magnificent castle, beautiful walks, stunning church and gardens, fantastic coffee shops, gifts shops and not to mention the wonderful Stags Head. We loved our holiday and were truly sad to leave The Oval.
Helpful Holidays guests, April 2013

This is the most gorgeous cottage. It is furnished and equipped to a very high standard and is warm and cosy. The Oval is very historic and atmospheric and in spite of all its modern conveniences it is a real step back in time to stay there. Being situated in Dunster is a real bonus as the village is delightful and has a great supply of appetising places to eat.
Helpful Holidays guests, March 2013

The Oval house has to be the very best of holiday lets of its kind. A wonderful house, seeping with history around every corner. It also has all the modern items that we need in 2013! Would recommend this great building to anyone .We shall be returning later in the year.
Helpful Holidays guests, February 2013

Great cottage and well situated for dog walking and pubs, there is also a hose in the back, which I don't think is mentioned, but is good for cleaning your dog if needed.
Helpful Holidays guests, December 2012

A very memorable and enjoyable holiday.
Helpful Holidays guests, December 2012

Exceptional property and location. We hope to return in 2013.
Helpful Holidays guests, October 2012

Very comfortable, characterful accommodation – just right for that special holiday.
Helpful Holidays guests, September 2012

It was an excellent holiday with a wonderful house that managed to be both very old and quirky but with all the modern comforts. We'll definitely book again - thank you
Helpful Holidays guests, September 2012

Great house in a great location for Exmoor and surroundings, being such an old house you really feel part of the scenery. Very well equipped, surprisingly spacious and comfortable. We loved it.
Helpful Holidays guests, September 2012

This cottage is one of the best our family has ever stayed in, and the welcome tray was the icing on the cake.
Helpful Holidays guests, August 2012

Fabulous house, fantastic location, everything in the house we needed. We were greeted with a very tasty cake, and treats for our dogs which we thought was very thoughtful We would stay again and highly recommend.
Helpful Holidays guests, July 2012

A very enjoyable holiday in a fantastic cottage, in a superb location.
Helpful Holidays guests, July 2012

This was one of our best ever UK self-catering holidays, thanks to the property owner's attention to detail and quality, as well as the property location. It was refreshing to find a property in which dogs were truly welcome, and where it was possible to keep them downstairs in a non-carpeted area. We were genuinely sad to pack and go home, in spite of having had less than kind weather!
Helpful Holidays guests, June 2012

We had a lovely week staying at The Oval in Dunster. It was the perfect house in the perfect location. It's ideal for long dog walks followed by a great choice of pubs and restaurants. The house provided everything we could possibly ask for, and we could see how much effort had gone into providing the highest standard of accommodation. Thank you.
Helpful Holidays guests, April 2012

The cottage and facilities were wonderful and all the extras of a Christmas tree, cake and dog treats made it more special.
Helpful Holidays guests, December 2011

We stayed at The Oval, Dunster. What a fabulous cottage, very nicely furnished and decorated and well stocked with everything that you could possibly think of. Wonderful, absolutely wonderful is the only way to describe it and it is a credit to the owner. We wanted a chilled relaxing break and The Oval and its surroundings provided that and loads more. Would definitely recommend and we would love to come and stay again.
Helpful Holidays guests, December 2011

Had a lovely holiday. Dunster and Exmoor provide excellent walks, horse rides and places to eat. We will be back.
Helpful Holidays guests, October 2011

Had a wonderful week here in the cottage and agree with all the other previous comments, it has everything needed for a comfortable and relaxing time. We are very impressed with everything here and the attention to the smallest detail is wonderful. We all loved the surrounding areas, a very beautiful place to visit. Thank you for our stay in your lovely cottage and a big 'Thank you' from the dogs for their treats (very much enjoyed).
Helpful Holidays guests with Diesel and Monty the dogs, October 2011

A beautiful cottage, extremely well-equipped - like going back in time. We love Dunster and the surrounding area. Selworthy is a very quaint village with an old, old church, and well worth visiting is Porlock. Thank you for letting us stay in your lovely home.
Helpful Holidays guests, September 2011

We had a very happy fortnight in this lovely house, everything we needed was here, and the weather was reasonable so we were able to sit in the garden. Thank you for a very clean and comfortable stay and welcoming treats.
Helpful Holidays guests, September 2011

We've had a lovely time here this week. The house is beautiful and our little girl loved playing Sleeping Beauty in the 'princess bed'. The best bits (according to our 5 and 2 year olds) have been the park around the corner, the train ride on the old steam train, playing knights on our walks, the Dunster Show where we met lots of sheep, cows and horses. Thanks for the boxes of games, our 5 year old is getting quite good at draughts now. We'll miss The Oval but we have lots of nice memories.
Helpful Holidays guests, August 2011

We've really enjoyed “living” in Dunster for a week. The Oval is an amazing place to stay and we loved the welcome goodies of chocolates, cake and doggie treats. Our 'boy' has really enjoyed resting his paws on the doggie cushions after his long walks! We loved the West Somerset Railway, walking on Blue Anchor beach and climbing Bats Castle – a long steep climb but worth it for the views. Horse riding followed by the best cream tea ever was one of the highlights of the week. Porlock Weir, the view from Dunkery Beacon, Tarr Steps, Valley of the Rocks, Lynmouth and Porlock Hill – all lovely and memorable. Can also recommend the ginger scones at The Victorian Tea Rooms! Sorry our week is over, thank you!
Helpful Holidays guests, August 2011

We picked The Oval as it looked beautiful in the photos and, knowing how fickle the summer sunshine can be, my philosophy was if it rains I'd like to be inside enjoying luxury! The photos were right – The Oval is a wonderful property, well-equipped, well decorated and thank you for the extras. Despite the weather we all loved Dunster, the castle, day out at Butlins, Porlock Hill, Lynmouth, Blue Anchor and Kilve. The jigsaws have been fabby and addictive – everyone sneaking to do a bit! Kilve beach is known for fossils. We came away with six fossils of ammonites.
Helpful Holidays guests, August 2011

On behalf of the family we thank you for the welcome we felt as soon as we arrived. We love this part of the country – such beautiful scenery and peaceful. We never wanted to leave.
Helpful Holidays guests, July 2011

Great cottage, great week! Everything you need – lovely stocked toy room for all ages. Thanks for the cake and biscuits! All in all lovely cottage and great place, had a wicked break. Thank you. (Fudge shop highly recommended!)
Helpful Holidays guests, July 2011

The cottage is delightful, lovely garden and location, wonderful walks in a beautiful village. Every comfort was available. Thank you Lucy.
Helpful Holidays guests, July 2011

Really enjoyed our week in The Oval. Our eight month old Daisy loved all the toys. A lovely characterful cottage – especially liked the four-poster bed. We found the list of Essential Attractions in the 'Everything you need to know' folder really useful. The highlights for us were the walking trail around Dunster; Selworthy; The West Somerset Steam railway and the view from Dunkery Beacon.

Had a great week staying at The Oval, the cottage is really fantastic, with all our needs met as it is so well equipped. You really do not need to bring anything except your clothes and yourself. Thanks Lucy.
Helpful Holidays guests, May 2011

Have been coming to Somerset for many years but this cottage has rated as “the best”. Everything you could possibly want in a holiday cottage and the personal touches were very much appreciated. Periwinkle cottage at Selworthy is a must for cream tea and for a snack or cream tea sitting in the gardens at Horner is a delight. The cottage has made our holiday so enjoyable and will certainly come back here again. Thank you.
Helpful Holidays guests, May 2011

Absolutely fabulous, we loved everything about Dunster and The Oval. The quirky house was brilliant – so warm and cosy. Our 16 month old twins loved the toys and running up and down the hallway playing peep boo with the utility door was the highlight for them! Hopefully we will return. Thank you very much.
Helpful Holidays guests, April 2011

Thank you so much for sharing this most beautiful home. We have been blessed with a week of sunshine so have been able to enjoy sitting out on the patio taking in all the wonderful views. You have thought of everything, no detail has been missed. We only ate out a few evenings at The Stag and Cobblestones because everything was here we didn't feel the need to go elsewhere. We enjoyed the walks up to Bats Castle, Conygar Tower and The Arches and Porlock Weir is so tranquil and unspoilt. We enjoyed sitting on the pebbles and looking out to sea. Lucy, you have made this the most pleasurable family holiday we have had. Your home and Dunster are truly magical – I feel like I've been to 'Camelot'. We will definitely be returning – so sad to be leaving.
Helpful Holidays guests, April 2011

We have had a lovely stay here at The Oval. The cottage is a fantastic base for us to explore the beautiful area. We loved looking for fossils on East Quantoxhead beach and enjoyed a visit to the Owl Sanctuary at Porlock. The kids loved the sandy beach at Minehead and Tropiquaria at Watchet. The kids were delighted to find the games and our 5 month old baby LOVED the baby toys - thank you! We will highly recommend to our friends with children as a great family get-away. Many thanks.
Helpful Holidays guests, April 2011

A very warm and welcoming cottage. Dog friendly, appreciated by Tara who enjoyed lots of long walks! Weather was kind to us and we even managed to enjoy sitting in the garden to have a cup of tea when we got back from walking.
Helpful Holidays guests, March 2011

What a fabulous week we've had here at The Oval. Thank you for our welcome treats, but particularly for thinking of and providing everything we could wish for to make our stay here such a comfortable and enjoyable one. Your attention to detail has made us feel truly spoilt and the house is just lovely.
Helpful Holidays guests, March 2011

Thank you for welcoming us to this gorgeous cottage, it is truly amazing. Warm, cosy with all mod cons a girl can ever need. The fireplace is truly the icing on the cake. The garden outside has amazing views. I would strongly recommend anyone to stay here and will most certainly tell my friends about Dunster and The Oval.
Helpful Holidays guests, March 2011

What a fabulous cottage with wonderful historical features. We didn't need to go out to eat with ingredients from Stuart Lowen's Farm Shop it was a positive pleasure to cook in your lovely kitchen. We had a great time doing some of your jigsaws. A great week, much enjoyed. PS. I had a great time and enjoyed all my walks. Woof, woof, Tasha.
Helpful Holidays guests, February 2011

What a cracking place this is Lucy. Half close your eyes and Shakespeare could walk through the door! Don't change a thing!
Helpful Holidays guests, January 2011

Dear Lucy, what can I say? A beautiful cottage with great amenities! Luckily for us we know Dunster and its walks, pubs and restaurants very well so we were very at home here. Tessa couldn't wait to go for her usual walks to Dunster Beach, Gallox Bridge etc and she would like to say thank you. The Luttrell Arms, The Stag and Reeves are a must – but cosy nights in by the fire are relaxing as well. We will be back!
Helpful Holidays guests, January 2011

Thank you for sharing such a wonderful cottage with us. We came together for an early Christmas celebration which was made extra special by all the wonderful treats provided to welcome us. We thank everyone for making our stay so special. 'Dunster by Candlelight' was well worth being here for. We have really enjoyed our stay.
The Brightwells, (from Dartmoor, Hertfordshire and London), December 2010

Thank you for a wonderful “Candlelight” weekend. We have fallen in love with your lovely quirky cottage. The Christmas tree, lights and log fire were the 'icing on the cake'. The mince pies and mulled wine went down a treat! We hope to come again next Christmas.
Garry and Kathy, December 2010

We have been coming to Dunster for many years. We have stayed in other places, and The Oval is by far the best. Thank you for the welcome pack and the use of this atmospheric house, it is nice to imagine the people who lived here over the years. I am certain we will be back.
Alyson and Jim, November 2010

'The Oval' has everything - and more - just as we have come to expect from Helpful Holidays. You have a delightful cottage equipped and furnished to a very high standard with thoughtful extras for people and pets! There are some super walks nearby. Dunster castle is a true fairytale castle with beautiful grounds. The steam train ride was loved by young and old and dogs are allowed too. We were sorry to leave.
Teresa, Nigel, Sarah, Ian, Oliver, Nathan and Goldie the Lakeland terrier, November 2010

The cottage was amazing. It was really warm and cosy. There are lovely walks nearby. The view from the garden was great and the cottage was very clean. Well done housekeeping – cottage very well equipped.
Erin, Lorna, Jacky and Stephy, November 2010

We have had a lovely stay here at The Oval. What a lovely cottage. We have done plenty of things this week and have only used the car a few times. It was really nice to have the chance of a log fire on a couple of the chilly nights. All in all we had a lovely time and would love to come back again.
Helpful Holidays guests Kate, Tom, Pat and Mick, October 2010

The house is amazing – it feels more like home than our current home (which is rented). We have loved spending time in Dunster. Our friends loved the house as we did, The best holiday home I have stayed in for 30 years.
The Ryan family, September 2010

Wow, what a fantastic cottage! We'll be back. Loved it!!!
The Webbs, September 2010

This cottage was all it promised to be and more. It was very well equipped and has been beautifully upgraded whilst still retaining its charm. The terraced garden is a real sun trap with lovely views over the village to wooded hills. Very lovely, civilised house in a beautiful village and surroundings - We would thoroughly recommended it to anybody.
Mr & Mrs Coleshill and their two sons (aged 17 and 10), Helpful Holidays guests, August 2010

This has been one of the best cottages we have ever stayed in. We loved going to Dunster beach and Porlock Weir. We would love to stay here again, you made us feel very welcome.
Jess, aged 8, for the Ball Family, August 2010

Had a great holiday here – wonderful house and village, dare to venture to 'Bats Castle' but have a good pair of walking boots and energy! And what fantastic views and tranquil surroundings. Dunster castle is lovely and worth a visit. For a typical day on the beach, without travelling far, Minehead is fine if not too busy, and a Butlins Day pass is lovely for the children. We had a wonderful day at Lynemouth via Porlock Hill. All in all, it's all here to do...
David, Lisa, Tom and Ben, July 2010

What an extremely cosy and homely cottage The Oval is! It has some wonderful mix of old and new which work so well together. We had a lovely week's holiday here. We've spent many mornings on Dunster beach with our dog, Lulu, we've had some great relaxing walks around Dunster castle and the village shops. The children especially enjoyed the steam railway trip. A truly relaxing week!
Rachel, Richard, Tommy, Charlie & Lulu the dog, June 2010

A fascinating house and a great centre for walking and pottering about - we have only used the car a couple of times all week - lovely! We really appreciate the thoughtfulness that has gone into equipping the house for our comfort. Many thanks.

Beautiful house.
Helpful Holidays guest, May 2010

Fantastic house - felt like a home from home. The surrounding countryside is amazing whichever direction you take. Thank you for the thoughtful extras that made us feel so welcome.
Helpful Holiday guests, May 2010

Such a lovely house! Our little boys loved the park. We look forward to our next visit. Be sure to climb up to the folly on the hill and take a trip on the steam train.
Helpful Holiday guests, May 2010

This was the best equipped property we have ever stayed at. Owner excelled in every way! Will book it again.
Helpful Holidays guest, May 2010

When we arrived and opened the front door of The Oval we loved it immediately. So much to discover and we appreciated the obvious care spent in blending the necessary mod-cons with its history. The house invites you to imagine the family that lived here when it was first built all those years ago. We found The Oval a great base from which to discover Dunster - everything is so close. All in all a great place and a great holiday.
The Storeys, April 2010

I brought my girlfriend here for a surprise for Valentine's Day. We really love the house - a great getaway for a winter weekend.
Andy and Kate, Valentine's weekend, February 2010

We were very cosy at The Oval even thought it was early in the year. We loved exploring the village and the Castle, and especially the church with its fascinating history and wonderful rood screen. We had great food and conviviality at The Luttrell Arms...Minehead was a revelation - all mod cons but still old-fashioned enough to remind us of our younger days.
The Watt family, January 2010

Many, many thanks for sharing the most wonderful cottage with us! We really had the most fantastic time and will take many great memories with us! The little touches were greatly appreciated (Maddie the dog loved her treats and we loved ours). Finally, we couldn't have wished for a better place to stay for our first anniversary.
Jo, Steve and Maddie Morfield, September 2010.

The Oval is a super place to stay and Dunster is packed full of interest. We did venture into Minehead once but found loads to do in the village and great places to eat. We loved the feeling in the house of being in the middle ages - especially the log fire and the 4 poster but thank goodness for all the mods cons. Even in December there was good walking on Exmoor, a lovely place to chill out after the exertions of London life. We plan to go back in the summer if we can get in!
The Watt family, December 2009
